BT Director Supports Governments Red Tape Challenge

Anyone looking at the new revamped government website, Red Tape Challenge will be fully aware of the businesses that support the idea that current legislation is mere red tape and should be eliminated.

click to go to websiteWith every legislative subject being under the cosh, Equalities is currently taking the brunt of those who believe that the Human Rights Act and equality legislation should be scrapped.

Amongst the many items on the home page of the website are listed 'champions' with Equality being the current theme being pushed for attack.

Given the recent debates at the CWU Annual Conference regarding management style and the continuing environment of bullying and harassment of members within certain divisions within BT, it is interesting to note that one of the main 'champions' of the red Tape Challenge website is BT's Director of people and policy, Caroline Waters.

According to the Red Tape Challenge website, 'She chairs the new Employers for Carers membership forum and is a strong supporter of flexible working and the value of retaining older workers.'

She is quoted as saying:

"We have a chance to make the Equality Act work for real people and for their families in a way that will support and advance business – however big or small it may be.  Let’s cut through the red tape and make fairness and inclusion a reality, we’ve come this far so get involved, give us the feedback and insights that will make this work!”

From this it appears she considers there to be red tape holding back Equality in the workplace. What will be really interesting is whether or not, like many, she uses such phrases to mean cutting back on current Equality legislation or is in fact someone getting involved to ensure Equality legislation is not watered down.
